Will of Æthelnoth and Gænburg
✠ Æthelnoth, the reeve at Eastry, and Gænburg his wife have shown their inheritance before Archbishop Wulfred and Æthelhun, his priest, and Esne, the king’s thegn. Whichever of them lives longer will inherit the estate and all the property, If they have a child, it will inherit, after the death of both of them, the estate and the property. If, however, they do not have a child and Archbishop Wulfred is alive, he will inherit the estate and pay for it and distribute the value on behalf of their souls, as charitably and as justly as he himself can arrange in his wisdom. And no one at a later day shall deviate from this agreement in any way from what is contained in this document.
✠ Wulfred, Archbishop
✠ Feologeld, Abbot
✠ Æthelhun, Priest
✠ Cuthbert, Priest
✠ Æthelnoth
✠ Gænburg
✠ Esne
This estate consists of three ploughlands at Eythorne. And if it happens that one or both of them goes south [on pilgrimage], the bishop will buy the estate, as will be agreed between them.
